KUALA LUMPUR: Good news for football teams across the country as the Malaysian Grassroots League (MGL) is accepting teams’ registration for the inaugural nationwide grassroots league next year.
More than 450 age-group teams nationwide expected to sign up with only 10 team slots for each category allocated for each state. The leagues in each state are split into three categories: Under-8, for kids born in 2013 and after; Under-10, for kids born in 2011 and after; and the Under-12, for kids born in 2009 and after. The team slots will be up for grabs and already made available for registration starting on the 15th December 2020.
“The inaugural MGL 2021 season will be unprecedented, as we are targeting 450 teams competing nationwide and slots will be given on a first come-first served basis. The registration can only be made via our website, www.malaysiangrassrootsleague.com which has started since December 15,” said Uzair Azim, Chief Operating Officer, Malaysian Grassroots League.
“Each state will have its own designated venue for the three leagues and all matches will be played at the same venue. This is designed to appeal to a variety of people with wide range of interests, such as parents and sponsors in a carnival-like environment.
“The leagues are scheduled to commence as early as February 2021 depending on the ruling from the Malaysian government amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Further announcement on the rules and regulations will be made in due course,” he said.
Uzair has also added:
“We are in the process of requesting tournament sanction from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), and we are hopeful for a positive feedback, as we are keen in working together with the national governing body to promote football at grassroots level.”
To further create more playing time opportunity for the kids, MGL continues to raise the ball in terms of the teams’ pathway upon completing the state leagues.
“League champions from each state will then compete in the MGL National Cup starting in the third quarter of the year. This is to ensure a complete pathway from state till national level. In fact, we are in talks for an international exposure,” he added.
